Fire-resistant hydraulic fluid

Shell Irus Fluid C is an advanced water-glycol fire resistant hydraulic fluid containing powerful additives to enhance its anti-wear, anti-corrosion and anti-oxidation properties.  The water content is approximately 40% by weight.

Applications

Shell Irus Fluid C is particularly suitable for demanding hydraulic applications where there is a high fire risk, such as those found in the

Mining and Metal Processing industries.

      In general, the anti-wear properties of water-glycol fluids decrease as the temperature rises.  By contrast, the anti-wear properties of Shell Irus Fluid C become more effective as the temperature increases.  At the high operating temperatures normally encountered in hydraulic oil systems, Shell Irus Fluid C gives a performance approaching that of anti-wear petroleum mineral oils.  Provided appropriate steps are taken to avoid undue loss of water by evaporation, this offers considerable advantages to users.

   Excellent fire resistance

      Gives excellent results in numerous fire resistance tests, including the severe requirements of CEC Mines Safety Commission.

Fluid Life

The life of Shell Irus Fluid C is comparable to mineral oils in a normal system.  When the fluid approaches the end of its life, the built-in  colour indicator loses its colour or changes from yellow to pink.

These characteristics are typical of current production. Whilst future production will conform to Shell’s specification, variations in these characteristics may occur.

Control of water content

Water content should be controlled within 35% to 45% by weight.  Condensate or de-ionized water should be used for any additions, which should be made slowly whilst the fluid is circulating.

An approximate check of the water content can be made from the viscosity of the fluid.  Accurate determination of the water content can be made in a laboratory with the use of a standard calibrated conical flask (225 ml volume with 0.25 ml calibrated neck) and a reagent consisting of 75% (by volume) chloroform and 25% n-butanol.  ۵۰ grammes of the Shell Irus Fluid C to be tested should be introduced into the conical flask.  The reagent is then added to bring the total to the 24 ml graduated mark on the neck of the flask.  The flash should then be stoppered, the contents thoroughly mixed by shaking, and left to stand for 30 minutes.  After this time a note is made of the volume (in ml) of the upper separated layer.  It is important to ensure that no water droplets adhere to the side of the flask in the lower solvent layer.

The volume of the separated layer is multiplied by two: this corresponds to the water content of the fluid expressed as a percentage weight.

Lubrication and Component Life

In general, water-glycol fluids are less effective bearing lubricants than petroleum mineral hydraulic oils, but are entirely satisfactory in systems containing pumps with plain bearings or lightly loaded ball and roller bearings.  However, in common with other water-based fluids a reduction in bearing life can be expected.  This will normally be included in the ‘derating’ made by the pump manufacturer.

Health & Safety

Shell Irus Fluid C is unlikely to present any significant health or safety hazard when properly used in the recommended application, and good standards of industrial and personal hygiene are maintained.

Avoid contact with skin.  Use impervious gloves with used oil.  After skin contact, wash immediately with soap and water.
